| Libya and US to open liaison offices |

Libya and America have agreed in Tripoli to open a Libyan liaison office in the United States, and an American one in Libya.
The agreement was one of the main issues discussed during the meeting between the Secretary of the General People's Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation and William Burns, the American assistant secretary of state and his accompanying delegation in Tripoli.
The outcome of the meetings held between Libyan and American working teams in the past period was also discussed.
The Secretary of the General people's Bureau for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation said that cooperation between the two countries particularly in economic fields, and several outstanding issues were discussed in the meeting.
He underlined that the agreement on opening of liaison offices for the two countries regarded as a step to promote the level of bilateral relations.
The Secretary pointed out that the situation in Iraq, and the importance of the UN presence to restore Iraq's sovereignty were also discussed. He said the American assistant secretary of state presented a comprehensive review of the position in Iraq.
The secretary said we spoke candidly and underscored the importance that the UN takes over the process of restoring sovereignty back to the Iraqis.
The meeting was attended by the secretaries of the Libyan People's Bureaus in Italy and Britain, director of the Americas affairs department at the Foreign Liaison bureau, and head of the American interests section in Libya.
